For the First Time in Nearly 50 Years, High School Football to Return to Ellsworth Area

by Jeff Fisher
Maine High School Football Huddle

Starting next fall, high school football will begin its rebirth in the Ellsworth area.

By a nearly unanimous vote, school directors have approved the establishment of a developmental sub-varsity program for the Ellsworth and Sumner high schools.

The Bangor Daily News reports that if all goes according to plan, the new team will apply to the Maine Principals' Association for varsity action in two years.

High school football has been played in the area since the late 50's.

For the first time in 25 years, Cheverus is a Maine high school football championship.

The Stags beat Bangor 46-8 to win the Class A title on Saturday for the school's first title since 1985.  The Forecaster reports that Cheverus was led by junior running back Spencer Cooke, who ran for four scores and amassed over 200 yards rushing in the second half.

Mountain Valley Ends Leavitt Win Streak on Way to Maine Class B Football Crown

Leavitt's high-powered offense was shutdown by a solid Mountain Valley defense Saturday in the Maine Class B championship game.

The Falcons finished a great season with a 20-0 shutout of Leavitt...snapping the defending state champs' 23-game win streak.  It was Mountain Valley's eighth shutout of the year, and came against a team that was averaging nearly 40 points a game.  The Falcons only allowed 30 points all season.

The Sun Journal reports that it was quite a finish to a perfect season for the Falcons.

Yarmouth beat Stearns 34-6 on Saturday to win the school's first Maine Class C high school football championship.

The victory for the Clippers also gave the school the distinction of being the first to claim two state titles in a season...the boys soccer team also won state gold earlier this year.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Yarmouth's Nate Pingitore had a big game with three rushing touchdowns.
