Windham Wins Maine Class A Championship in Just Seventh Season of Football

Seven was a lucky number for Windham Saturday night as it beat Bangor 35-21 to win the Maine Class A high school football championship in just its seventh season of varsity football. The Maine Sunday Telegram reports that the Eagles had to battle back from a 14-0 second quarter deficit to win the title.

Leavitt Runs Past Cape Elizabeth to Win Maine's Class B Title

Leavitt High used a strong rushing attack to defeat Cape Elizabeth 35-21 to win Maine's Class C high school football championship Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium. The Maine Sunday Telegraph reports that Hornet running back Josh Strickland led the way with 298 yards and four touchdowns.

Dirigo Wins Maine Class C Football Championship

For the third straight year, there's a new champion in Maine's Class C division. Dirigo won the 2009 championship with a 37-20 win over Foxcroft Academy on Saturday. The Maine Sunday Telegram reports that Dirigo closed out a 12-0 season with a strong performance with a strong performance by quarterback Nic Crutchfield, who threw for three touchdowns.

Top dogs be gone!

Saturday was not a good day for top-ranked Thornton Academy and two-time defending Class A champ Bonny Eagle as both team's lost in the Western Maine semis.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Thornton Academy suffered its first loss of the season in a 36-7 loss to Cheverus. And, the Press Herald also reports that Windham knocked-off the defending champs by going for a two-point conversion in overtime.

The Biddeford/Thornton Academy showdown next week is set. Biddeford moved to 6-1 with a hard fought 14-0 win over Noble. The Portland Press Herald reports that Biddeford had to fight-off an upset bid after a 0-0 tie at half. Thornton Academy is a perfect 7-0 after a 49-14 over Marshwood.

Biddeford Tigers Have Opponents Seeing Double

Every team to play Biddeford this year is probably thinking its seeing double...times three! The Tigers have three sets of twins on this year's roster. Trevor and Tyler Parker are running backs and defensive backs; Alex and Erik Villandry play wide receiver and defensive tackle respectively; Jordan (tight end) and Will (offensive guard) Hevey round-out the doubles.

NFL's Giants and Packers Once Clashed in Maine

The 50th anniversary of the first and only NFL game to be played in Maine was celebrated Saturday during the Bangor/Skowhegan game played in Bangor. The New York Giants played the Green Bay Packers in a pre-season game on September 5, 1959 at Bangor's Garland Street football field. The Portland Press Herald takes a look at the historic event that marked the first-season of Vince Lombardi as the Packers head coach.

Last night, Bangor beat defending Eastern Maine Class A champ Skowhegan 41-12. Check-out the game wrap-up from the Bangor Daily News.

Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Set for Saturday

The Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic will celebrate its 20th year anniversary on Saturday. The game featuring 80 of the top players in the state pits the East stars against the West stars. The West won last year 24-6 to take a 15-4 lead in the all-time series.

Snowstorm Postpones Naming of Maine's Top High School Football Player

The three finalists for Maine's James J. Fitzpatrick Trophy, which is awarded to the state's top senior high school football player, will have to wait a little longer to find-out who is the 2008 winner. A snowstorm in Portland postponed Sunday's banquet.

The finalists for this year's Fitzy are Billy Clark of Skowhegan, Nate Doehler of Bonny Eagle and Justin Staires of Mountain Valley. Click here for a great story from the Morning Sentinel on the award that some call Maine's Heisman Trophy.
